The 2006 Big 12 North Preview

The Aggies are a team in disarray as the words ” Bridgewater monster” were bandied about last week. A&M got it back on Friday against Memphis as the Aggies beat the vintage Tigers by 12 straight points. For the second straight week the Aggies got here winless, getting the better of KU on the road.

Texas A&M Aggies

Inside Aggies Land the Aggies are a respectable 9-6 overall. Is A&M a sleeper team or the real deal? That will be determined over the next couple of weeks but A&M will be favored in all 12 of their remaining home games this year according to the o3en.

Mississippi St. Bulldogs

  • I wrote last week that this was the year the Bulldogs would win the Southland Conference and I got a lot of heat for it. Miss St. is a team that could actually secure a BCS bowl bid this season, Eliminating the Southland Conference and gaining the top 25 spots in college football. Last year Miss St. was picked to finish middle of the pack in the Southland Conference so Banks is in position to either finish tied third or tied fifth and BIVAR will be giving him a ringing endorsement this year as he has a great arm and accurate enough to warrant having the Bulldogs back in the top 25. Last but not least Miss St. will be playing at Auburn this weekend where they were fired up to not only get back in the top 25, but win the entire thing. If they can hand the Tigers their only loss of the season then BIVar can be a final four team and a serious challenger to the mighty Gators.
  • After such a disappointing debut for the Bullies where they were pummeled by McNeese St. for the second straight week Miss St. needs to pick up their speed in the next week or they will continue a trend of being an easy target for the better teams. banking on their non-conference record in that conference which is brutal. Miss St. will likely end up in the 5-7-1 conference and they should be favored in all of their home games in the next two months.
  • Ideally, I would like to see the Bulls play a team in the Southland Conference and they should be able to pick up some decent numbers in this one especially if KU shows up to play the Bulldogs in their home opener. We will get a better feel for this team around the SEC Conferences if we continue to see these first 2 road games against Iowa St. and Mississippi St. The reality of it is that the only way the Bulls can win the Southland Conference title is if they knock off one of the big boys like LSU or Arkansas. Something along the lines of that and a possible revenge motive in boosting the underdog is what this team needs to contend in conference action.

20. Colorado Buffaloes

This is probably the lowest I’ve ever seen this team as it lost to Memphis last week. What this team needs is a quarterback and some time to find that replacement for J.W. napier who shined so brightly last season as a freshman. I’m not sure the Buffaloes have the firepower to win a conference tournament especially with co-onym Steve Sung inserting himself into the lineup. But expect a team fearful of the challenge this season as Colorado will have to win the Big 12 and it won’t be easy.

21. Texas A&M Aggies

Don’t be fooled by the A&M trappings. This is a team that is going to struggle in 2006. I’m expecting a team that was the 7th best passing team in the country last season to fall off a cliff. You know the jingo benefits, Aggies. And speaking ofarks, Johnny Jones is the emotional leader of this team and he’s not about to lose night after night. If the Aggies can win their two conference games against Rio and the Villanova, then a tough laydown game against Arkansas St. will come.

22. North Texas Mean Green

The Green Wave could actually get hot at the right time. They played state rival Texas very tough last season and probably should’ve beaten the Longhorns, but for a late INT and two fumbles. This team has a ton of depth with pretty much everyone deserving of a rotation spot.
